The Student Perspective
The practicum experiences are rich and varied, influenced by the operation, the location and the student's interests and skills. Li Lu (Class 14), for example, was able to take her practicum experience all the way to China. The work experience allows students like Li Lu to layer classroom learning with practical application to broaden horizons - often far beyond what is expected. Following are two examples of the student perspective.

My workplace is not far from the airport, it called Yunnan Airport Group Co., Led. It operates all airports (12 airports) in Yunnan Province, and the company is approved by Yunnan Provincial Government. I recommend you to take look their website if you have time. I am very happy to be appointed to Airport Operation Department because this job suited to my major. My main job here is to verify the airport RAIC application material. When I first got this direction, I wondered, "why did I need to check this information, and was it not security’s business?" When I was thinking about this, my host came to me and told me a story. Last year, one person pretended he was an airport franchisor, and he applied a RAIC. As he was later discovered not to be a franchisor, the airport security department became even more serious about he RAIC application process, and set new rules. Any employees who need to apply for a RAIC must get permission from the functioning department (Airport Operation Department) first. This new rule effectively monitored the airport security quality.
My job is not difficult, but I have to check everything step-by-step, very carefully. First, if an airport employee needs to get a RAIC, they must provide complete materials which include the RAIC Application From, the identity credential with photo on it, a recent facial photograph, and the Background Check Summary Form from the local police station. Second, I have to check the contract document to make sure our airport has a franchise contract with applicant’s company or agency. Third, if the applicant’s materials are perfect, I will issue a certificate to show the airport operation department manager, and get her signature. After that, I need put the official seal on the certificate paper, and telephone the applicants to receive their certificate. Finally, the applicant may bring the certificate to the security department.
As I mentioned earlier, the new terminal is going into service in December (2011), so many people send their documents to me every day. I have checked more than 1,000 applications so far. Besides verifying the documents, I also give a hand to my colleagues when they are busy. For example, I help them to make power point slides, use excel to analyse the English route data, translate their summary into English, and make lots of phone calls.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to go to the New Kunming International Airport, and I took some pictures to introduce the new airport to you. It is still being built, and there are lots of things that need to change inside of the terminal. I hope you like this airport. Li Lu
