Workplace Practicum
he guidelines presented here are intended to help you realize maximize benefit from your workplace practicum experience both professionally and academically. It will help if you think of the entire practicum experience as another step towards your ultimate career goal. The Term 2 Practicum (AVAO 2300), will be 90 hours long - approximately 3 weeks. In the Term 3 Practicum (AVAO 3400), you have an opportunity to complete a longer experience of 150 hours, or about 5 weeks. These experiences allow you to meet new people and explore aspects of aviation your find most interesting in depth.
In other words, take some time to seek out a practicum. Right from the beginning, treat the practicum experience as you would a job search. Think about what skills, knowledge or ability you have that would be a benefit to an organization. Follow the practicum postings and apply for those positions where you can provide the most value. Prepare a cover letter and resume package tailored to the practicum experience you hope to achieve. The practicum host will contact you directly to set up an initial interview, and it is up to each student to manage the interviews and any other requirements for the practicum position.
The practicum host will confirm the practicum details with you. Be sure you are clear about the start time, date and reporting location. Once you have this information confirmed, please complete the Notification of Practicum Form in the forms package below, and return it to the Chief Instructor by at least the Friday prior to the first day of your practicum. You will also need to to have the Limitation of Liability form completed by the host and returned to the Chief Instructor as soon as possible after confirming your paracticum.
The complete package of forms and activities required for the practicum includes: notification of practicum (form), limitation of liability (form), attendance & punctuality (form), journal, thank you letter, summary report, host evaluation (form). It is up to you, the student, to manage the forms and deadlines required for successful completion of the practicum. You will find the forms you need at the bottom of this page in a pdf document.
