Airport Operations Workplace Practicum
The Airport Operations program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) provides students with an opportunity to learn about the airport environment both from an operational perspective and a business perspective through classroom studies and workplace practicums.
Many of the instructors for the Airport Operations Diploma program are subject matter experts employed in the industry, which means the knowledge and coursework students are involved with is current and pertinant to the aviation workplace.
During the (unpaid) practicum experiences, students are able to apply their knowledge and enthusiasm to actively contribute to the workplace while increasing their learning. And at the same time, practicum hosts benefit from the help with special projects that these keen aviation students provide.
Two practicum opportunities are provided in the 16-month Airport Operations program, the first in Term 2 (90 hours) and the second in Term 3 (150 hours).
Term 2 practicum students are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They have completed course work in technical writing, communications, leadership, marketing, governance, project management, aviation security and safety. They also have some knowledge of terminal and airside operations. (Practicum 90 hours, or approximately 3 weeks).
Term 3 practicum students are eager to put their knowledge, skills and experience to good use. They are familiar with quality systems, airport safety, emergency preparedness, environment and wildlife managment systems, terminal and groundside safety, planning, design and capacity. (Practicum 150 hours, or approximately 5 weeks)
If you are interested in finding out more about the practicums or hosting a BCIT practicum student, please contact the Aviation Operations Chief Instructor, Cheryl Cahill.
