Practicum Guide for Hosts
First, thank you for hosting, or considering to host an Airport Operations student for either the second or third term practicum. The workplace experience provides a wonderful opportunity for students to apply classroom knowledge and skills to workplace situations. Workplace practicums can also provide real benefits to you, the host, by allowing you to move forward on projects with help from enthusiastic learners with great skills.
Here are a few tips that may facilitate the practicum process for you:
1. As each practicum is considered a credit course, the students are covered by BCIT for workers compensation and liability insurance (WCB). If you agree to host a student, (s)he will ask you to sign a form that must be returned to the Chief Instructor. It is advisable to keep a copy of the completed form for your records.
2. To earn credits for the practicums, students are required to participate in the practicum for a total of 90 – 150 hours minimum, depending on the term. If the project requires more than 150 hours to complete, additional time may be negotiated with the student at their discretion and yours.
3. Students are required to complete a log book every day and to register their arrival and departure times, which they will be asking the host manager/supervisor to initial.
4. To evaluate student performance accurately, we ask that you, the host manager/supervisor complete a simple performance evaluation form, which the student will give you. Please complete it at the end of the practicum and forward to the Chief Instructor.
5. Since this is an integral aspect of the students’ education, it is important that they be given candid feedback. The students will be requesting an exit interview with you at the end of their practicum assignment.
As part of the aviation community, we depend on people like you to support us in preparing these students to become the effective and knowledgeable aviation professionals that you would want to employ. Thank you for agreeing to host a BCIT Practicum student.
